Daylily Nut -- Seedling #94-02-05
Just a sentimental keeper. (click on any picture for a larger view)
Seedling #94-02-05 M fr. Dor. dip. 23", 5.5", 2 branches, 14 buds. Pale flesh colored self, thin lighter midrib, yellow-green throat. (Hemerocallis 'Graceful Eye' x H. 'Peppermint Stripe') Seedling #94-02-05. Fertile both ways.
Parent of H. 'Floozy', this seedling has a distinctive color on a very vigorous plant. The color can best be described to be as close as I've seen in a flower to the color of Northern European flesh. When it first bloomed, my very fair-skinned daughter was a baby, and I gave it a garden name in her honor. Shown in the picture is the my own skin. The underside of my forearm which gets little sun, is a pretty good match for the flower color.
Seedling #94-02-05 is a very vigorous plant that multiplies rapidly. However it has a limited bud count and thus a relatively brief bloom period by modern standards. Nevertheless, I keep this sentimental favorite around. I have no idea whether someone else has registered a flower with similar color, but I wouldn't be surprised to find one with better form and bud count out there somewhere.
The DaylilyNut Farm has never had rust. It is state inspected, and is located about 25 miles west of Baltimore, MD. In 2006 the garden was moved to a cold-pocket valley, on the boundary between USDA climate zones 5 and 6 (coldest winter night is about -10F).
