Seedling #05-37

M Dor. dip. 24", 7", 2 branches, 14 buds. Pinced Crispate Unusual Form. Rich purple self, bright white midrib, large white to yellow-green throat. {F x [JLM x (T x (H x PS))]} x {CS x [O x (GV x PS)]}, in full form: {Hemerocallis 'Floozy' x [H. 'Jedi Little Mike' x (H. 'Tani' x (H. 'Hamlet' x H. 'Peppermint Stripe'))]} x {H. 'Charleston Snow' x [H. 'Oceanside' x (H. 'Grape Velvet' x H. 'Peppermint Stripe')]} Seedling #05-37. Pollen fertile. Pod fertility not evaluated.

Here is an exciting unusual form. The distinction of this pinched crispate is the prominent bright, near-white midrib which radiates out from the luminous yellow-green star of a throat. The combination of the rich purple petals pinching outward, flaunting the midrib at its apex, presents a striking visual display, both from a distance and on close inspection. What a wonderful serendipity this flower was. None of its ancestors display UFo characteristics, however this flower's form is very consistent, at least here in Maryland under diverse growing conditions, from first bloom to last. But count and branching are average. The scapes are in fine proportion with the foliage; and foliage is healthy and dark green. #05-37 benefits superbly from my long-term program of breeding for clear near-white base color. The color contrast is sure to keep this flower a distinctive addition to any UFo collection for quite some time.

More about some of the ancestor seedlings of #05-37 (with pictures) can be found on the hybridizing for prominent white midribs page.

The DaylilyNut Farm has never had rust. It is state inspected, and is located about 25 miles west of Baltimore, MD. In 2006 the garden was moved to a cold-pocket valley, on the boundary between USDA climate zones 5 and 6 (coldest winter night is about -10F).
