H. 'Fringe Binge' Wetzel (2005) EM, dormant diploid, ivory white self above green throat, 26" scape, 4 1/2" flower, 3 brances, 25 buds, fragrant. (H. 'Wendy Glawson' x H. 'Ornate Ruffles'), seedling #98-06-27. Easily pod fertile, pollen appears sterile.
H. 'Fringe Binge' is named for its very pronounced, unusually refined and fine-scaled ruffling, getting finer at the edges. The effect is very pleasing to my eye, and is very consistent from first bloom to last. The color is ivory to near white. This flower comes on an extremely vigorous and healthy plant. Foliage is wide and a pleasant blue green. Bloom is in good proportion, just above the foliage. At left is a color comparison between H. 'Fringe Binge' and H. 'Gentle Shepherd'
H. 'Fringe Binge' is an EM bloomer but has never rebloomed here in my Maryland gardens which range between zones 5 and 7. Its parents are (H. 'Wendy Glawson' x H. 'Ornate Ruffles'). WG is an Ed Brown Early cream white, which is somewhat of a weak grower here, although it is very hardy. Yet it throws some amazingly robust offspring occasionally, and this is one of them. Another of these is H. 'Lights of Valinor', which is also a spring 2005 introduction. H. 'Fringe Binge's pollen parent, H. 'Ornate Ruffles', is a near white dormant by Darrel Apps which comes from H. 'Monica Marie'.
The DaylilyNut Farm has never had rust. It is state inspected, and is located about 25 miles west of Baltimore, MD. In 2006 the garden was relocated to a cold-pocket valley, on the boundary between USDA climate zones 5 and 6 (coldest winter night is about -10F).
