DaylilyNut -- Seedling #03-07-30

(Click on the image for a larger picture of the flower)

This the maiden flower from a newly bloomed seedling from 2003. This bloom is the most starkly contrasting bicolor I have ever seen. Unfortunately it was a one-off. It has never bloomed so intensely bicolor since. On a normal bloom the sepals are nearly as bright red as the petals. Originally I kept this seedling only for that bicolor contrast. And I gave half of it away the next spring after realizing that it was not the bicolor that I had hoped. Nevertheless, I'm finding this flower to be a great bridge plant for passing on bright red "luminescence" in its offspring. It has figured strongly in my hybridizing for several years.

Seedling #03-07-30's pollen parent is Van Sellers' Hemerocallis 'Big Apple'. The pod parent is a rich velvety purple with good non-yellow base tissue. -- a good bridge plant in its own right.
