Well, just for fun, I played with the "look" of this 2003 dormant diploid seedling that I have kept. Initially, I kept it just because I liked the flower. But I've found it to be a fine parent; and it has proven to be a fine, healthy balanced plant.

Although #03-07-12 has a very crisply defined "Mascara" eye, my hybridizing program would never pretend to compete with similar products from Grace Stamile and Elizabeth Salter, among others. If there is any distinctiveness to this flower, it is the clearness of the white underlayment color. This flower has Hemerocallis 'Forsyth Snow Boy' as pollen parent and a complex eyed sib to the pod parent of #03-07-11 as the pod parent. The pod parent's ancestry is shown at left. It is [(H. 'Joan Senior' x H. 'Peppermint Stripe') -- seedling shown at upper right -- x (H. 'Siloam Virginia Henson' x H. 'Janice Brown') -- shown at upper left]. The bottom row are the two siblings of that cross that I have kept. The one at left was the pod parent of #03-07-11. The lower right flower is the pod parent of #03-07-12. It is clear that the "mascara" eye pattern came from this parent, but what is surprising is how much more defined and clear the pattern is in the child. See the discussion under #03-07-11 for more detail and a photo of the common pollen parent Hemerocallis 'Forsyth Snow Boy'.

#03-07-12 passes on its vigor and clear underlying color as well as the crisp edging to the eyezone. One of its kids, #05-33, has an amazingly complex flower pattern that is unique among daylilies. As you see, I played "god" with a photo of that one as well. As a bonus, #05-33 holds its flowers on a widely branched scape with exceptional bud count. This vigorous seedling is being closely watched as a potential future registration.
